TMS — transcranial magnetic stimulation — is a noninvasive brain-stimulation treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It is FDA-cleared for treatment-resistant depression and is delivered in a clinic by trained clinicians, without anesthesia, while you stay awake. The most common form is repetitive TMS (rTMS). It is generally used when other depression treatments have not worked well enough — not as a first step.

What it is

TMS uses an electromagnetic coil placed against the scalp to deliver brief magnetic pulses. Those pulses generate small electrical currents that stimulate nerve cells in targeted brain areas — most often regions linked to mood. The goal is to influence the activity of brain circuits involved in depression.

TMS is one of several brain-stimulation (neuromodulation) therapies. It differs from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT): TMS is noninvasive, requires no anesthesia, and you stay awake and alert, whereas ECT is a more intensive procedure done under general anesthesia.
